I'm joining, but I'm starting from zero

Welcome!

Join Mastodon

The first thing you need is an account on Mastodon*. You can explore this list of available servers, or you can just join the flagship server. Maybe you should just join the flagship server.

It's like old Twitter: you'll see short posts from the accounts you follow in reverse chronological order. It's great.

Follow the dj

Then you need to follow @[email protected].

Near the top of the leftmost column in the Mastodon interface is a search box.

the Mastodon search box

Enter @[email protected] into the search box and click "Go to profile @[email protected]".

searching for the dj

Then all the way to the right you'll see the profile for @[email protected]. Click the "Follow" button.

follow the dj

Then tell Chris!

Chris has to know you followed so he can tell the dj that you're cool. Not just everybody can interact with the dj. So let Chris know and pretty soon you'll get a private message from the dj welcoming you and telling you how to submit songs.

How do I submit songs?

You send a private message to @[email protected] with:

The content of your message is what the dj quotes when it picks the song to play.

You can only have one link in the message for the dj to add it to the queue, so don't try to add supplemental reading or anything. (Save that for the discussion about the song later!)

Your welcome to the club begins with a private message from @[email protected]. You can submit songs by replying to that message over and over and over again.

When are songs picked?

Every weekday at 9am Eastern. (That's 3pm in Paris.)

How are songs picked?

First a person is picked. People who haven't been picked in a while have a greater chance of getting picked. The longer it's been since you've been picked the greater the chance. But even the person picked yesterday has a chance. There's no set order or rotation, but it should be a pretty even spread over time.

Once a person is chosen, one of their songs is picked.

That's all it is.
